JAGGERY: THE MEDICINAL WHOLE SUGAR

Jaggery has been prescribed for use in the Ayurvedic system of medicine.
Ancient Medical scriptures dating back to 2500
years state how jaggery purifies the blood,
prevents rheumatic afflictions and disorders of
bile and possesses nutritive properties of high
order.

Sushruta Samhita,
Sutrasthan 160-161 states-“Jaggery works as a
lubricant, helps excrete urine, and regularizes
bowel movements. It regulates vata
(digestive),
pitta (nervous) systems, increases
kapha
(phlegm), and improes vitality. It is a good
aphrodisiac.” |

Charakha Samhita
, Sutrasthan 238-239 states-
“Jaggery is sweet. It aids to excrete urine,
regularizes blood flow, and enriches the bone
marrow, blood, fat, flesh, and phlegm.” |

Ashtanga Hridayam,
Sutrasthan 47-49 states-
“As jaggery has sweet properties, it controls
the vata & pitta systems,
regulates blood circulation, and increases the
internal strength of the body.” |

| In
addition to being a food source as rich as
honey, jaggery has been discovered to have some
unique medicinal properties, which are well
documented but until recently, almost forgotten.

Also, jaggery is known to have
cooling, diuretic and refreshing
properties, besides improving throat
conditions, normalizing semen and sperms
and serving as a lactogenic and cardiac
tonic. It has also been prescribed in
various diseases like anemia, jaundice, breathlessness
and kidney problems. |
