According to the AHA, scientific
research suggests that we can reduce the risk of
cardiovascular disease - by following these guidelines

To increase our health
potential, the NRC, a part of the National Academy of
Sciences, suggests including more carbohydrate-rich
foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes and
whole-grain cereals in the diet. These foods often have
little or no cholesterol and can be low in total fat and
saturated fat.
Many provide the fiber that may
help lower blood cholesterol levels and the accompanying
risk of heart disease.

For
the population, a healthy diet that can be recommended
for all healthy people over two years of age is low in
total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol and that is
moderate in sodium.
Fat
intake should be lowered to no more than 30% of
calories, while limiting saturated fat intake to less
than 10% of calories. Cholesterol intake is limited to
no more than 300 mg per day. For persons who have
already been diagnosed with some form of CVD, further
modifications are usually advised. Increase fiber intake
to 25 grams per day; especially increase soluble fiber
for persons with high blood cholesterol and diabetes.

The ADA counsels that
there are no "good foods" and "bad foods," just good
diets and bad diets. In other words, all foods have a
place in a balanced diet.
The AHA recommends limiting dietary fat, but points
to carbohydrate consumption - including sugar - as part
of a healthy diet.

|

Therefore, it is not
logical to say a NO to sugar in the diet if one is
dreading CVD. What is important is to keep a healthy
diet pattern & a physically active lifestyle!
