ANSWERS TO THE QUIZ
1.After you eat something, it takes 15 minutes for your sugar to metabolize and affect the blood sugar?

Stomach emptying from a bowl of cereal would depend on cereal type, fiber content, and total volume of milk combined with the cereal. In general, though, within an hour or two the stomach would be emptied of the average bowl of corn flakes. Full-fat milk would also be slower than skim milk. Readings of blood sugar would be up and down within the 2-hour mark too.

2.Sugar has more calories than fat.

As carbohydrates, sugars actually contain fewer calories than most other calorie-containing nutrients: --fats contain 37 kilojoules per gram

--alcohol contains 29 kilojoules per gram

--proteins contain 17 kilojoules per gram

--sugars (carbohydrates) contain 17 kilojoules per
   gram.

3.Sugar is never used to neutralize the over doze of insulin, because it circulates slowly through the body.

The medical condition "hypoglycemia" is very rare. It results from an underlying illness that affects the body’s ability to maintain its blood sugar level. In hypoglycemia, blood sugar levels fall below normal. Symptoms such as shakiness and headaches may occur.

Sugars do not usually affect blood sugar levels in healthy people. Low blood sugar levels occur most often in people with diabetes who are not managing their condition optimally. The treatment in this case is to eat sugars such as those found in fruit juices, sugar cubes, hard lollies or soft drinks.

4.A person whose semen has been polluted by excessive wind and bile in the body, sugarcane juice is very harmful to him

Sugarcane juice is a rich source of vitamins and minerals. So much so, that jaggery, a product prepared out of sugarcane juice is even called the medicinal sugar. Cane juice has inherent properties to cleanse semen.

5.Eating sugar causes diabetes.

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), "at least 10 recent studies have shown that simple sugars DO NOT spike blood glucose any higher or faster than other carbohydrates.
Researchers do not know why diabetes occurs, but they know sugars do not cause it. Diabetes is a disorder in the way the body handles sugars. People with diabetes do not make any, or enough, insulin. Or they cannot properly use the insulin their bodies do make. The body needs insulin to use most sugars.

6.Sugar is harmful in cases of infantile diarrhea; that kills around 3.5 million children in a year in underdeveloped countries.

Sugar is extremely valuable in treatment of serve infantile diarrhea, a serious problem that kills around 3.5 million children in a year in underdeveloped countries. Oral re-hydration treatment (restoring of liquids by mouth) is used for infants with diarrhea due to cholera or rehydrating viruses. It is simpler and easier to mix sugar with salt to treat de-hydration children even in most remote areas. Further, studies prove that oral sucrose is an effective intravenous treatment in retaining rehydration.

7.Sugar has no role in wiping out infections in wounds.

Sugar has tremendous healing power--it helps in wiping out infections in all types of wounds. It absorbs any available moisture, thereby keeping the wound dry and hence furthering healing.

8.Sugar is not a 100% utilizable carbohydrate.

Sugar is indeed completely utilizable. All foods - whether it is a burger or a carrot, a chicken drumstick or pasta, - all gets broken down into glucose during digestion. And for sure, glucose is a sugar! Glucose is completely metabolized in the body- thereby making sugar a 100% utilizable carbohydrate.

9.Sugar causes hyperactivity in children.

Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Sugars Task Force concluded in 1986 that there is NO evidence confirming that sugar consumption causes behavioral changes in normal children or adults.
Ironically, more recent studies have confirmed that sugar might actually induce a calming effect rather than causing such a condition as hyperactivity! In fact, some studies suggest that low-protein, high-carbohydrate meals can lead to relaxation. Both ADA & FDA confirm there is no evidence to indicate that sugar is responsible for behavioral changes in youths or adults.

10.Sugar enhances discoloration of the surface of frozen fresh fruits.

Sugar helps protect the surfaces of frozen fresh fruit from contact with air which produces enzymatic browning -- discoloration due to oxidation. In some cases, such as with peaches, nectarines and apricots frozen in a syrup pack, ascorbic acid is also added to help prevent darkening.

11.Zero calorie sweeteners must always have NIL calories.

According to FDAs approval, all sweeteners with 1-5 calories can be marked / labeled as zero calorie sweeteners. It does not necessarily mean calorie-free!

12.Cyclamates (artificial sweeteners) are permitted in UK & USA.

Cyclamate was banned in 1970 in the UK and the USA following some adverse toxicity results, which indicated that it is carcinogenic in animals and causes testicular atrophy.

13.Sugar in ice cream increases its freezing point.

Sugar in ice cream infact lowers its freezing point. The main ingredients of an ice cream are- sugar and cream/ milk/ fruit juices. Here, the dissolved sugar attracts water and so hardly any water is available for crystallization during freezing. As an effect, the freezing point of the liquid mixture is lowered. As liquid mixture begin to freeze, the sugar in the unfrozen solution becomes more concentrated, further lowering the freezing point. Therefore, a temperature much lower than the freezing point of the liquid is used to ascertain a speedy & constant cooling. This recipe of lower freezing point and colder than freezing temperature ends up in a frozen product with minuscule ice crystals; thereby imparting a smooth & creamy texture to the ice cream.

14.There are about 1000 sugar crystals in each cube of sugar.

There are 725,000 sugar crystals in each cube of sugar. In 1872, Henry Tate, an English sugar merchant, patented a method of cutting sugar into small cubes.
For making cubes, sugar crystals are dissolved in a small amount of water, forming a syrupy solution. The crystals are pressed together into molds, and the syrupy solution acts as a glue, compressing them all together. The cubes are then dried in a series of microwave ovens and then packaged.

15.Ordinary sugar browns more rapidly than invert sugar.

Ordinary sugar is plain simple sucrose. Invert sugar is an equimolar mixture of glucose and fructose- obtained by breaking sucrose into its two components. Herein, the fructose fragment is highly reactive & browns almost immediately. This accounts for the rapid caramelization of invert syrup.

16.A can of Coke has 10 grams of sugar and a can of Pepsi has 11 grams of sugar.

Many people don't count soft drinks as "junk food" simply because it's a drink. It's true they don't contain fat, but a Coke or Pepsi is not any better that a whole bag of candy. It's primarily made up of water, colors, and sugars. A can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar and a can of Pepsi has 41 grams of sugar. That is about seven teaspoons or 13 lumps of sugar per can!

17.All words ending in "ose", such as fructose and glucose, are sugar.

It is important to read labels and look at the sugar content of products. Corn syrup, molasses, honey and all words ending in "ose", such as fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, etc are sugar. To know more, go to- Other Sweeteners
